Association of cholera with fairs and festivals is well known and equally well known is the close association of fairs and festivals with Indian life. The disease and the country have accordingly had a very intimate and a very old mutual concern. Most of the devastating epidemics, and all the six of the recorded pandemics of the last century, some of which spread as far east as Japan or as far west as Europe and America, started from India, and most of these had their origin in religious fairs held in this country (Wu Lien-Teh et al., 1934).
